A second thought

During coffee time I picked up an old issue of Nature (Feb 8, 2008). There has been a proposition of a presidential debate of Science (www.sciencedebate2008.com) wherein the US presidential candidates debate their stands in science topics ranging from climate change and teaching intelligent design in science class. Scientists of high-profile and others have signed for the good cause. David Goldston, now a visiting professor at Harvard University, questions in his column whether it is appropriate to put science, especially funding appropriation into the spotlight at such a national level. He points out that National Science Foundation (NSF) has been enjoying a relatively moderate and healthy growth of budget and peaceful operation, whereas NASA stands at the other extreme where not only its budget but almost every moves are constantly monitored under the microscopes of the congress and the public. Goldston also pointed out that the doubling of NIH's budget from 1998 to 2003 was aggravated by political pressure, resulting in a surge in research money and an inflated biomedical research community now complaining insufficient funding and lack of new researchers.

Goldston instead proposes to have a debate of policy on science and have the candidates reinstate the integrity of science in devising policies, an issue Bush infuriated scientists at home and abroad and the major reason of this advocation for a presidential science debate, within one of the national presidential debates. He believes that categorizing science funding as a domestic spending will do more good to the scientific community than turning it into a politics football.

集三十年鏗鏘

讀蘋果日報，才知道今天（2008年3月5日）是香港電台的《鏗鏘集》的三十周年。小時候家中電視從六點半新聞開始長開，到聽完「歡樂今宵，再會。各位觀眾，晚...安...」才關上。星期一至五的電視劇我不一定都追看，但星期天晚上的《鏗鏘集》我倒很少錯過。還不到十歲我便很喜歡看它。我已經記不起有那一集特別令我印象深刻，但從十多年的浸淫當中，我學到了了解事情的背景、細心聆聽、觀察、和理性分析的重要。

三十年是一段不短的時間，《鏗鏘集》不但記錄了香港的變遷，也記錄了這幾十年來我們從關心自身變成也關心世界。而我也覺得自己不僅僅是一個香港人，而是屬於這個世界的一個人。

雖然現在香港電台已把近年的《鏗鏘集》和其他節目放在網上，任何時間都可以看，但它的streeming很不暢順，節目頭幾分鐘花了十多分鐘也下載不了，而且人不在香港，也沒有那股勁看香港的電視節目。

《鏗鏘集》仍不斷獲得香港和外國的電視紀實節目的獎項。我希望這個高水準的節目可以延續下去，繼續陪養出理性的下一代和優秀的記者。這有賴香港電台能褪變成BBC一樣由納稅人支持但編輯獨立和立場中立的廣播機構。BBC是英國人引以為傲的文化財產，希望香港電台也能成為令香港人驕傲的電台。

煩重的工作

6月3日，日本共同社報導總理溫家寶因工作太煩重，決定不連任總理。

總理工作哪有不煩重的道理？只是有說「在好的制度中，壞人做不到壞事；在壞的制度中，好人卻做不到好事」。可恨這年頭有熱情的人，如朱鎔基、溫家寶都只做了一屆總理便做不下去。

2007年6月4日，和一個大學同學和她的朋友一起去了維園的六四燭光晚會。原本打算一個人去，但剛好在e-maiil談起，便一起去了。

和以往一樣，我在燭光晚會中只拿著蠟燭，靜靜的坐著或站著，沒有唱歌或叫口號。畢竟我是懷著掃墓的心情來，和做自己認為對的事。難道你會在清明掃墓時叫口號嗎？

集會過了一半，聽了天安門母親之中年紀最老的李雪文的錄音和王丹的錄像之後便走了。

令人欣慰的是，到了第十八年，還有足以坐滿維園全部六個足球場的人數出席，其中有上了年紀的公公、年輕的男女、還有像坐在我後面，一直向自己的孩子講解事件經過的父母。不只是中國唯一一個大型的六四集會，維園的悼念活動是全世界最多人參與的。這是我作為一個香港人唯一一個為香港驕傲的事。幾年前我和自己說過，要珍惜這個機會，只要人在香港，我一定會在6月4日來維園。Every candlelight counts.

黃 雀 行 動 總 指 揮 首 揭 救 人 歷 程

【 本 報 訊 】 在 六 四 事 件 中 ， 「 黃 雀 行 動 」 協 助 偷 運 逾 400 名 民 運 人 士 逃 離 內 地 往 海 外 ， 行 動 總 指 揮 陳 達 鉦 首 次 披 露 當 年 中 共 黨 政 軍 各 部 門 人 士 ， 以 至 走 私 客 均 有 參 與 行 動 ， 拯 救 行 動 範 圍 遍 佈 全 中 國 。

於 六 四 事 件 18 周 年 前 夕 ， 本 港 商 人 陳 達 鉦 上 月 27 日 到 訪 美 國 紐 約 ， 絕 少 接 受 傳 媒 訪 問 的 他 接 受 《 多 維 社 》 訪 問 時 表 示 ， 當 年 萬 料 不 到 中 共 會 開 槍 鎮 壓 89 學 運 ， 「 我 激 動 得 昏 了 過 去 ， 進 了 醫 院 ， 為 了 表 現 心 中 的 憤 怒 ， 我 把 7 歲 的 兒 子 剃 光 頭 。 」

他 表 示 ， 當 年 因 有 朋 友 叫 他 幫 忙 協 助 六 四 逃 亡 者 ， 他 一 句 「 冇 所 謂 」 便 成 為 總 指 揮 。 他 更 首 次 披 露 ， 除 本 港 影 視 名 人 岑 建 勳 ， 中 共 黨 政 軍 各 部 門 ， 以 至 走 私 客 ， 都 有 參 與 行 動 。

人 稱 「 六 哥 」 的 陳 達 鉦 憶 述 ， 當 時 利 用 俗 稱 「 大 飛 」 的 快 艇 經 華 南 沿 岸 偷 運 逃 亡 者 經 香 港 往 海 外 ， 部 份 逃 亡 者 更 需 喬 裝 打 扮 ， 避 人 耳 目 ； 行 動 足 跡 遍 佈 全 中 國 ， 「 從 華 南 到 華 中 華 北 ， 一 直 到 西 北 ， 以 至 蘭 州 。 」 其 間 曾 發 生 撞 船 意 外 ， 導 致 四 名 協 助 拯 救 的 港 人 身 亡 。

黃 雀 行 動 由 89 年 6 月 中 旬 開 始 ， 直 至 該 年 年 底 因 拯 救 王 軍 濤 及 陳 子 明 失 敗 而 終 止 。 當 時 協 助 拯 救 的 港 人 黎 沛 及 李 龍 慶 被 內 地 公 安 拘 捕 ， 陳 達 鉦 與 北 京 當 局 談 判 ， 「 我 答 應 中 國 政 府 以 後 再 也 不 做 這 樣 的 事 情 … … 自 己 的 妥 協 得 到 了 支 聯 會 和 岑 建 勳 的 理 解 和 同 意 。 」 黎 、 李 二 人 於 91 年 獲 釋 。

提 及 黃 雀 行 動 名 稱 的 由 來 ， 陳 達 鉦 說 ， 行 動 原 本 沒 名 稱 ， 91 年 岑 建 勳 接 受 英 國 廣 播 公 司 訪 問 時 靈 機 一 觸 ， 引 用 成 語 「 螳 螂 捕 蟬 ， 黃 雀 在 後 」 來 形 容 這 次 行 動 而 得 名 。

當 年 成 功 逃 往 美 國 的 中 共 已 故 總 書 記 趙 紫 陽 的 智 囊 團 成 員 嚴 家 其 ， 對 逃 亡 過 程 也 不 太 清 楚 ， 「 我 無 法 從 開 車 的 司 機 、 快 艇 駕 駛 員 那 了 解 到 甚 麼 ， 一 路 上 他 們 完 全 不 理 睬 我 們 。 」

不 過 ， 陳 達 鉦 不 肯 披 露 進 一 步 詳 情 ， 「 現 在 說 出 真 相 ， 為 時 過 早 。 」

Oil Cravers

It is a twisted situation. This world relies too much on petrol oil.

The OPEC (Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries) is going to discuss to cut oil production because of the "falling price" .

What the fuck? You guys are relying on the black gold sitting under your asses for your Rolls Royce and Ferrari. Can't you be more decent?

Well, actually raising the price is not bad at all. The price of petroleum, especially in the US has been too low to give people any incentive to develop alternate fuel. When the price at the pump was over US2.7 per gallon, the most talked topic in the radio here was the source and technologies of alternative fuel.

You don't even need to debate about carbon emission or global warming. There are 2 obvious reasons not to rely on petroleum:

1. Petroleum is not replenishable, at least not in the next 1 million years. Obviously, it will be used up one day. Surveys had predicted that the oil fields in accessible area will be used up in the next 100 years. There might be more oil fields in deep sea, but the cost of mining them will be too high to be profitable. But still, oil will be used up one day. We need to find other energy source before that day comes.

2. You put yourself in a very bad strategic position to rely on a few countries for your major energy source. To keep themselves in a better position, the US had put a lot of effort to "secure" its interests in Middle East, and messed up the whole Middle East and irritated the Muslim world. Iran is still the second largest exporter of petroleum oil!! What the fuck? The West gives Iran money for the oil, and Iran uses the money to buy weapons from Russia/China/US for the militants in Iraq and Syria, and now threating to attack the US if the US stop their nuclear program by force. This is a karma completely avoidable.

I was looking up the web about geothermal energy. To my surprise, the country with the biggest production of geothermal energy is not any European country but the US. The Philippines is the first runner up. The biggest dry steam field in the world is The Geysers, only 145 km North of San Francisco. There are dozens of geothermal power plants in California and a few dozen more in the Mid West of the US. Of course, each of these states are bigger than France and the energy production from these geothermal plants do not contribute to a very big fraction of the whole energy consumption. But it is a good start.

I expect we need to use multiple sources of energy in the future. Geothermal energy is not everywhere. We can harvest wind power in the coast or even off the coast and solar power in the deserts. Setting up solar power farms in the deserts can actually keep the sand from the sun and trap moisture too. Has anyone done any experiment on it?

I know I know. We need a mobile and easy energy source for cars. Fuel cells. I know nothing about material science. But I am thinking to sacrifice the pleasure of acceleration and go for a hybrid engine car when I need to change my car. Well.. the design of the suburb of the US is based on cars. I need a car to do everything. I will do my best to save more energy.

Mariane Pearl

I read an interview of Mariane Pearl in a magazine.

Mariane is a freelance journalist. She married Daniel Pearl, the chief of the South Asia bureau of Wall Street Journal. In 2002, She was pregnant and expecting her first baby when Daniel was sent to Pakistan for an interview with a leader of the terrorists. It turned out it was a hoax, and Daniel was kidnapped and held hostage in demand of releasing prisoners from the US.

A few days later, Daniel was beheaded. The terrorists filmed the execution and put it on the internet.

In less than two weeks, Mariane gave birth to their son, Adam.

Adam is 4 years old now. Mariane said she was not angry with the terrorist anymore. She now wanted to get different civilizations to talk but not fight.

I found myself more touched and more connected to people who lost their loved ones than before.

Milton Friedman

Milton Friedman died today at 94.

I am no economist. I took an entry economic class in college and I have long forgot everything I learned from it.

Friedman's theories had influenced the whole post-70s world. In 1960s, no one listened to his theory of free market backed although it was backed by vigorous logic and mathematics, when the Keynesian economics of heavy government intervention was at its hype. When his prediction of the end of economic boom created by intense government intervention after the World War II, and the beginning of the lengthy depression and loss of jobs became true in the 70s, Friedman found himself under the spotlight. Ronald Reagan and Margaret Thatcher were deeply influenced by his theories and advices on limiting government power. His theories also pointed out the fallacy of communism, and inspired a few people in the East Bloc who led the upthrow the rule of the communists.

As Ben Bernanke, now chairman of the Federal Reserve, put it in a speech honoring Mr. Friedman in 2003, “His thinking has so permeated modern macroeconomics that the worst pitfall in reading him today is to fail to appreciate the originality and even revolutionary character of his ideas.”
