當然將來哪一天也許會出現比議會民主制更好、更高級的政治制度，但那是將來的事情，現在還沒有。基于這一點就可以說，一個國家要實現現代化，不僅要實行市場經濟，發展現代的文明，還必須實行議會民主制這種政治制度。不然的話，這個國家就不可能使它的市場經濟成爲健康的、現代化的市場經濟；也不可能實現現代的法治社會。就會象許多發展中國家，包括中國出現權力市場化，社會腐敗成風，社會兩極分化嚴重的情况。

蘋果日報 2009年5月15日:
鮑彤說：「就我所知，早在 1992年他（趙紫陽）就有這個（錄音回憶）想法； 1993年（趙）先寫提綱， 2000年開始進行錄音。」「當時趙紫陽的情況非常困難，他在三位朋友幫助下，進行回憶和錄音，這些錄音分別保存在三位朋友的手裏。」
「這些錄音都是趙紫陽在六四後，經過深思熟慮而講的，是他作為中國共產黨一分子，經歷幾十年風風雨雨後，心中想要說的話，是他的政治遺言！」
「我認為，趙紫陽的政治遺言，屬於全體中國人，所以我決定，將他的錄音遺言以文字形式，公之於世，這是我的主張，我對此負責！」

王 丹 在 記 者 會 上 強 調 ， 20 年 前 的 民 運 ， 是 中 國 有 史 以 來 最 大 型 的 民 主 運 動 ， 並 反 駁 「 天 安 門 沒 有 死 人 」 的 說 法 ， 他 指 六 四 屠 殺 鎮 壓 完 全 是 中 共 政 權 的 錯 誤 所 致 ， 盼 望 所 有 中 國 人 不 要 忘 記 六 四 死 難 者 。 他 指 ， 經 濟 發 展 雖 改 變 了 中 國 ， 但 貪 污 腐 敗 沒 有 改 變 ， 「 中 國 人 追 求 民 主 自 由 的 熱 情 ， 不 會 因 為 時 空 環 境 的 改 變 而 改 變 。 」

會 上 作 出 四 點 宣 示 ， 包 括 期 盼 海 內 外 中 國 人 在 六 四 20 周 年 時 用 各 種 方 式 表 達 紀 念 ； 特 別 是 在 六 四 當 日 ， 進 行 白 色 行 動 計 劃 ， 呼 籲 所 有 中 國 人 換 穿 白 色 衣 服 ， 悼 念 六 四 死 難 者 ， 「 用 白 色 來 覆 蓋 中 國 」 ； 將 每 年 4 月 27 日 訂 為 中 國 民 主 節 。 胡 平 指 ， 六 四 已 是 一 個 符 號 和 象 徵 ， 不 僅 要 悼 念 六 四 死 難 者 ， 也 要 悼 念 在 中 共 60 年 暴 政 下 死 去 的 同 胞 。 他 說 ， 6 月 本 來 就 是 穿 白 衣 服 的 季 節 ， 穿 白 衣 服 不 會 有 風 險 ， 當 千 千 萬 萬 人 都 在 這 天 穿 白 衣 服 ， 形 成 一 片 白 色 海 洋 ， 會 讓 全 中 國 、 全 世 界 感 動 ， 也 能 提 升 人 們 的 道 德 形 象 ， 「 我 們 要 用 盡 可 能 的 方 式 傳 播 建 議 ， 在 六 四 這 天 用 白 色 覆 蓋 中 國 ， 向 世 界 和 歷 史 宣 示 我 們 的 哀 思 和 追 求 。 」

發 表 六 四 民 間 白 皮 書
會 上 發 表 的 《 六 四 事 件 民 間 白 皮 書 》 ， 由 民 運 人 士 、 現 為 美 國 執 業 律 師 的 李 進 進 執 筆 ， 王 軍 濤 、 胡 平 、 嚴 家 其 、 王 丹 等 人 參 與 討 論 及 給 予 意 見 ， 並 得 到 60 多 名 學 生 領 袖 、 學 者 支 持 。 白 皮 書 主 要 從 法 律 角 度 ， 根 據 中 國 官 方 已 披 露 的 社 論 、 公 告 、 報 告 、 當 事 人 回 憶 及 媒 體 報 道 等 史 料 ， 從 政 治 背 景 及 法 律 角 度 ， 分 析 當 年 的 事 件 ， 證 明 89 民 運 北 京 並 無 暴 亂 ， 而 是 人 民 的 和 平 請 願 ， 六 四 屠 殺 性 質 不 容 質 疑 。

要 當 局 進 行 全 面 調 查
王 軍 濤 指 ， 很 多 人 爭 論 89 民 運 學 生 的 策 略 是 否 有 問 題 ， 以 及 學 生 與 政 府 誰 對 誰 錯 ， 但 白 皮 書 要 說 明 的 是 ， 當 年 鄧 小 平 用 正 規 戰 的 方 式 鎮 壓 平 民 ， 是 不 合 理 的 。 他 指 ， 當 年 北 京 根 本 沒 發 生 動 亂 ， 北 京 市 長 陳 希 同 後 來 說 北 京 在 6 月 3 日 凌 晨 出 現 動 亂 ， 這 是 錯 的 ， 事 後 中 共 法 庭 的 判 決 書 及 文 件 均 無 證 據 顯 示 六 四 鎮 壓 前 北 京 出 現 動 亂 或 暴 力 衝 突 。 白 皮 書 指 ， 六 四 是 「 平 暴 」 在 前 ， 抗 暴 在 後 。

王 軍 濤 指 ， 他 與 王 丹 分 別 被 列 為 黑 手 及 頭 號 通 緝 犯 ， 事 後 當 局 也 沒 有 判 他 們 「 武 裝 叛 亂 罪 」 。 換 言 之 ， 所 謂 「 動 亂 」 都 是 共 產 黨 為 打 壓 民 眾 堆 砌 的 藉 口 ， 不 應 在 法 治 社 會 出 現 。 他 認 為 ， 紀 念 六 四 可 喚 醒 盲 目 的 靈 魂 。 中 國 社 科 院 政 治 研 究 所 前 所 長 嚴 家 其 也 指 ， 中 共 指 六 四 為 暴 動 ， 是 天 大 的 寃 枉 ， 一 定 要 翻 案 。

發 佈 會 上 還 要 求 中 國 當 局 對 六 四 進 行 全 面 公 開 的 調 查 ， 應 由 全 國 人 大 常 委 會 進 行 獨 立 調 查 ， 並 要 道 歉 ， 對 受 害 者 作 出 賠 償 ， 同 時 追 究 責 任 者 的 法 律 責 任 ； 同 時 要 求 中 國 當 局 公 佈 六 四 死 難 者 的 人 數 、 名 單 ， 釋 放 目 前 仍 被 監 禁 在 監 獄 的 民 主 人 士 ， 呼 籲 全 國 人 大 批 准 「 公 民 權 利 和 政 治 權 利 國 際 公 約 」 ， 使 之 成 為 具 有 約 束 力 的 國 家 法 律

Run of the Charles

This is the second year I do the race. Our company does the race every year. We don't have enough women for a women's team, so we only have a men's team and a mixed team. I do the same leg I did last year, which is famous for its half mile (800 m) portage - run with the boat - in addition to the 2 miles paddling down the river. The weather was warm so as the water. It was a great time.

1989 年 4 月 26 日 ， 中 共 中 央 機 關 報 《 人 民 日 報 》 刊 出 社 論 〈 必 須 旗 幟 鮮 明 地 反 對動 亂 〉 ， 用 「 動 亂 」 來 形 容 當 時 的 學 運 ， 為 學 運 作 出 負 面 定 性 。 曾 擔 任 已 故 總 書 記趙 紫 陽 秘 書 的 鮑 彤 昨 對 本 報 指 ， 該 社 論 是 中 共 將 自 己 推 向 與 人 民 對 立 的 開 始 ， 也 是導 致 六 四 血 腥 鎮 壓 的 開 始 。 中 南 海 前 智 囊 嚴 家 其 則 指 ， 「 四 ． 二 六 社 論 」 激 化 了 學生 與 當 局 的 矛 盾 ， 是 重 要 轉 折 。 有 六 四 受 難 倖 存 者 也 指 ， 社 論 的 錯 誤 定 性 ， 導 致 了嚴 重 的 後 果 。

《 人 民 日 報 》 刊 登 「 四 ． 二 六 社 論 」 當 日 ， 北 京 高 校 臨 時 學 生 聯 會 在 中 國 政 法 大 學 宣 佈 成 立 ， 指 摘 社 論 嚴 重 歪 曲 事 實 ， 並 號 召 翌 日 大 遊 行 抗 議 。

社 論 首 次 對 學 運 作 評 價 ， 指 一 些 人 悼 念 胡 耀 邦 期 間 ， 製 造 謠 言 ， 指 名 攻 擊 黨 和 國 家 領 導 人 ； 蠱 惑 群 眾 衝 擊 黨 和 國 家 機 關 ， 又 指 在 西 安 、 長 沙 等 地 發 生 打 、 砸 、 搶 、 燒 嚴 重 事 件 。 社 論 指 學 生 們 不 是 為 悼 念 胡 耀 邦 ， 不 是 為 推 進 中 國 民 主 ， 也 不 是 為 發 牢 騷 ， 「 而 是 打 着 民 主 的 旗 號 破 壞 民 主 法 制 ， 其 目 的 是 要 搞 散 人 心 ， 搞 亂 全 國 」 ， 「 這 是 一 場 有 計 劃 的 陰 謀 ， 是 一 次 動 亂 」 ， 「 不 堅 決 地 制 止 這 場 動 亂 ， 將 國 無 寧 日 」 。

社 論 將 那 場 愛 學 運 推 到 敵 對 面 ， 激 起 北 京 和 全 國 大 學 生 強 烈 反 應 。 4 月 27 日 ， 北 京 爆 發 大 規 模 遊 行 示 威 ， 近 百 萬 人 參 加 ， 除 大 學 生 外 ， 北 京 市 民 和 工 人 也 加 入 ， 他 們 高 喊 「 大 學 生 萬 歲 」 ， 聲 援 大 學 生 ， 各 地 學 生 也 紛 紛 赴 京 參 加 示 威 ， 八 九 學 運 終 演 變 成 全 國 民 眾 參 與 的 民 主 運 動 。

已 故 總 書 記 趙 紫 陽 前 秘 書 鮑 彤 昨 接 受 本 報 記 者 電 話 訪 問 時 指 ， 《 人 民 日 報 》 的 「 四 ． 二 六 社 論 」 是 中 共 自 己 把 自 己 推 到 學 生 和 人 民 對 立 面 的 開 始 ， 也 是 導 致 六 四 血 腥 屠 殺 的 起 點 ， 但 這 個 社 論 絕 不 是 當 時 中 央 的 意 見 ， 「 而 是 鄧 小 平 個 人 的 看 法 ， 是 鄧 小 平 聽 了 李 鵬 等 人 的 小 報 告 後 ， 自 作 主 張 。 」 鮑 指 ， 學 運 開 始 後 趙 紫 陽 一 直 當 事 件 為 人 民 內 部 矛 盾 ， 指 出 學 生 的 民 主 和 反 腐 要 求 ， 其 實 也 是 中 共 的 要 求 。

「 但 4 月 25 日 鄧 小 平 在 家 中 召 見 李 鵬 等 ， 為 學 潮 定 性 ， 指 學 運 是 有 組 織 、 有 計 劃 的 反 黨 行 動 ， 李 鵬 於 是 在 《 人 民 日 報 》 以 社 論 形 式 將 此 公 開 。 」 鮑 彤 指 ， 那 是 鄧 小 平 第 一 個 致 命 錯 誤 ， 而 5 月 17 日 鄧 又 走 錯 一 步 ， 決 定 戒 嚴 ， 「 六 四 悲 劇 終 於 無 可 避 免 。 」 他 認 為 ， 該 社 論 給 後 人 兩 大 啟 示 ： 一 是 政 黨 決 不 能 走 到 人 民 對 立 面 ， 與 人 民 為 敵 ； 二 是 執 政 有 錯 一 定 要 知 錯 就 改 ， 決 不 能 自 以 為 是 ， 「 那 不 是 一 個 治 理 國 家 的 政 黨 應 有 的 作 為 。 」

因 六 四 流 亡 海 外 的 中 共 前 智 囊 、 中 國 社 科 院 政 治 所 前 所 長 嚴 家 其 昨 也 對 本 報 表 示 ， 該 社 論 是 當 時 北 京 市 委 書 記 李 錫 銘 和 市 長 陳 希 同 向 鄧 小 平 謊 報 軍 情 的 結 果 ， 但 趙 紫 陽 也 有 疏 忽 ， 不 應 該 在 這 關 鍵 時 候 出 訪 北 朝 鮮 ， 讓 李 鵬 之 流 有 機 可 乘 ， 借 主 持 工 作 之 機 ， 居 心 叵 測 向 鄧 小 平 進 言 。 而 在 六 四 屠 城 時 被 坦 克 輾 斷 腿 、 目 前 在 美 國 求 醫 的 前 北 京 體 育 學 院 學 生 方 政 昨 也 表 示 ， 社 論 令 事 件 發 生 根 本 轉 變 ， 共 產 黨 的 錯 誤 定 性 ， 激 發 學 生 進 一 步 表 達 意 願 和 爭 取 權 利 的 決 心 ， 「 社 論 對 學 生 運 動 的 錯 誤 判 斷 ， 跟 後 來 的 戒 嚴 、 鎮 壓 是 一 脈 相 承 的 。 」 他 說 ， 獨 裁 政 權 對 社 會 不 同 聲 音 判 斷 反 動 行 為 ， 最 終 導 致 了 重 要 的 後 果 。

Tiananmen Memorial in Boston

It was hidden in a small shabby park in Chinatown. I only learned about it from the news when a prominent person from Hong Kong came and laid down the flowers. I hope I live long enough to see one set up in Tiananmen Square.

Paddling on Ipswich River

Spring is still reluctant to come. But we have to get prepared for the canoe race. It is only 2 weeks away. Dan and I went to Ipswich River and paddled a bit. I needed to practice my steering also.

At one point we came across a couple of nesting ducks. Dan said we would get killed if we ran into their territory. We drifted slowly by them, but the male duck didn't take a chance and flew at us and yelled at us (literally), trying to chase us away.

Dan also spotted beavers twice. Freaking sharp eyes.

I brought my underwater camera Nikonos-V along and took a few photos on the boat. This camera is truly a tank. It also has some funky orange color rubber on its body for practical reason. It is just beautiful.

April 4

I went to a photographic event of the Yankee Photographic Society at Danvers High School. The two talks in the morning were interesting, but the model shooting and high-jinx that came afer were less so. I wandered the campus and sneaked out to Danversport and took more interesting photos with my 58-years-old Rolleiflex.

Historic Polar Images

The Scott Polar Research Institute in the University of Cambridge has made their archive of some historic images of polar explorations in the turn of 20th century public. Shots made on glass plates in 1911 are still as vivid as photos taken today.

I didn't want to put this video on my facebook because I didn't want to advertise for our competitor. It is a squeal to their famous PCR song. This time it is their real-time PCR reagents. It is freaking hilarious though.

Centralized Science Laboratories Building

Many people say this building is not "harmonious" with the surrounding because of its color glass and wavy shape. I spent over 10 years studying and working at CU so my view should count.

I think being harmonious with the surrounding = boring and making no contribution to the scene. This building occupies the center of the scene if you look up the hill from outside the train station. The architect didn't let the chance of making a good use of this position slip away. If you look closely and think about it, this building is designed to be the focal point of the scene viewed from outside but merge with the surrounding when viewed from the other side.

If you look at it from outside the train station (by the bridge that goes nowhere), this building adds a colorful focal point to the scene.

However, if you look at the Science Center from NA or UC you won't spot this building easily because it merges with the surrounding very well in terms of color and shape from that side.

It is way better than the Hyatt hotel by the train station. This glassy piece of shit destroys the view of the Shatin valley from NA and Science Center, at the same time spoils the landscape of CU viewed from the Racecourse or the highway.

The annoying security locks inside the building is another story. Most likely it has nothing to do with the architect.

Salute to the architect (I can't find who he is in CU's website) and the administrators who approved this design.

Getting away

I've spent too much time at work lately. Just want to get away on my own. My colleague was selling a couple of half price ski tickets for Ragged Mountain. It is only 2 hours away. I snatched them without thinking too much. I didn't even bother to get someone to go with me and I spent a quiet day on the snow.

It turned out they have a very scenic green trail. I had 3 runs on it.

The resort closes after next weekend. Perhaps I will go again and use the other ski ticket.

Spring snow

It was March 8 and it had been snowing since the day before. I arrived at my lab and dropped my gloves and my hat by the window to let them dry.

Hopefully this snow marks the end of the winter.

Oishii at Chestnut Hill

Oishii at Chestnut Hill is probably the most authentic and best sushi bar in Boston area. There is only 1 L-shape sushi bar and a small round table. It was a Thursday night and three sushi chefs and 3 waitresses served about 15 people at a time.

The sushi was very good, but it was the toro tatar and the grilled yellowtail that were most impressive. I have never had grilled fish with skin so crispy and flavored and meat so soft and juicy.
