A Hero Falls

Chancellor: The dark side of the Force is the pathway to many abilities some consider to be.. unnatural.

Anakin: Is it possible to learn this power?

Chancellor: Not from a Jedi.
________________________

Revenge of the Sith (2005) is a real Star Wars movie after The Empire Strikes Back (1980). It took 15 years and 3 Star Wars movies until a real story line surfaced to the epic. Revenge of the Sith has a few story lines which are well-put together: how Anakin turns to the Dark Side of the Force; why the Jedi Order cracks down; and how the Republic turns into an empire. The previous episode Attack of the Clones has done a good job in putting the last story line into place.

Revenge of the Sith itself is a double tragedy: a uprising star (Anakin) of the Jedi Order turns against the Order because he wants to learn the power to save the love of his life (Padme), and thus annihilating thousands of Jedi Knights across the galaxy; a democratic Republic falls into the hands of an authoritarian Emperor. Padme dies because Anakin has "gone on the path that I (Padme) cannot follow." Padme dies at child birth as seen by Anakin in his dream; the Republic falls when "democracy dies in a thunder of applause (to giving the Chancellor absolute power during wartime)".

The movie has also done a fantastic job technically. The opening space battle is awesome. I should say very pleasing to eyes. The sword fights are breath-taking. The audience gave a standing ovation when the movie finished when I saw it. And this is the only movie I paid and saw in a cinema twice. I agree a lot when people say it is the best Star Wars movie ever made, even better than The Empire Strikes Back.

Burgers

Forgiveness

Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe is visiting the US. He was greeted by a few protests against the war crime Japan committed in World War II, particularly the organized crime against Asian women - "Comfort Women". I was watching the news in the train and a protest sign caught my attention. It reads like this:

FORGIVE AND FORGET
IS POSSIBLE
ONLY AFTER ADMITTANCE

Yes. No one deserve forgiveness if he denies the crime he committed. Look at Germany. It is not a shame to admit a crime, especially when it is not committed by your own hands. Former German Chancellor Gerhard Schroder had kneed down at the Holocaust memorial in Poland when he was in office. You can't tell how big the portion this action contributes to his own political benefit, but it itself is a history.

In the Japanese political system, it is impossible for their Prime Minister to do things like that. Emperor Akihito has expressed remorse to China for their suffering during the World War II, and on his visit to Saipan, the US territory where deadly fight had occurred in the Pacific battles, the Emperor
offered prayers and flowers at several memorials, honoring not only the Japanese who died, but also American soldiers, Koreans forced to fight for Japan, and local islanders. If both the Chinese and Japanese Governments really want to reconcile their relationship and go for the good for both sides, make good use of the constitutional status of the Emperor and invite Emperor Akihito to Nanjing. That will become the turning point of history.

The Solemn Street Light

This is one of my favorite pictures that I have taken. Aug 9, 2006. I was visiting San Diego on my own. On the night I came back from Ocean Beach, I took a small street back to the hotel, and I came across this street light. I was strike by the mood of the scene - it was as solemn as I was. I grasped my camera and capture the mood.

To me, this little street light hooked on the wall is like a lonely guy trying to make a mark in the world by shooting its dim light onto the ground. But that is not easy. The light has to go through the rough wall before reaching the ground. The little fellow has to shoot so hard that some of its light leaks out from its back.

San Diego has a Gas Lamp District where all the street lamps are still burning gas. But those gas lamps are more like empty shells without a soul.

Go! Bananas!

I use to eat a banana every morning. Below is an article about the health benefit of banana that I have recently came across on the web.

Bananas contain three natural sugars - sucrose, fructose and glucose combined with fiber. A banana gives an instant, sustained and substantial boost of energy.

Research has proven that just two bananas provide enough energy for a strenuous 90-minute workout. No wonder the banana is the number one fruit with the world's leading athletes.

But energy isn't the only way a banana can help us keep fit. It can also help overcome or prevent a substantial number of illnesses and conditions, making it a must to add to our daily diet.

Anemia : High in iron, bananas can stimulate the production of hemoglobin in the blood and so helps in cases of anemia.

Blood Pressure: This unique tropical fruit is extremely high in potassium yet low in salt, making it perfect to beat blood pressure. So much so, the US Food and Drug Administration has just allowed the banana industry to make official claims for the fruit's ability to reduce the risk of blood pressure and stroke.

Brain Power: 200 students at a Twickenham (Middlesex) school (England) were helped through their exams this year by eating bananas at breakfast, break, and lunch in a bid to boost their brain power. Research has shown that the potassium-packed fruit can assist learning by making pupils more alert.

Constipation: High in fiber, including bananas in the diet can help restore normal bowel action, helping to overcome the problem without resorting to laxatives.

Depression: According to a recent survey undertaken by MIND amongst people suffering from depression, many felt much better after eating a banana. This is because bananas contain tryptophan, a type of protein that the body converts into serotonin, known to make you relax, improve your mood and generally make you feel happier.

Hangovers: One of the quickest ways of curing a hangover is to make a banana milkshake, sweetened with honey.. The banana calms the stomach and, with the help of the honey, builds up depleted blood sugar levels, while the milk soothes and re-hydrates your system.

Heartburn: Bananas have a natural antacid effect in the body, so if you suffer from heartburn, try eating a banana for soothing relief.

Morning Sickness: Snacking on bananas between meals helps to keep blood sugar levels up and avoid morning sickness.

Mosquito bites: Before reaching for the insect bite cream, try rubbing the affected area with the inside of a banana skin. Many people find it amazingly successful at reducing swelling and irritation.

Nerves: Bananas are high in B vitamins that help calm the nervous system.

Overweight and at work? Studies at the Institute of Psychology in Austria found pressure at work leads to gorging on comfort food like chocolate and chips. Looking at 5,000 hospital patients, researchers found the most obese were more likely to be in high-pressure jobs. The report concluded that, to avoid panic-induced food cravings, we need to control our blood sugar levels by snacking on high carbohydrate foods every two hours to keep levels steady.

Premenstrual syndrome (PMS): Forget the pills - eat a banana. The vitamin B6 it contains regulates blood glucose levels, which can affect your mood.

Temperature control: Many other cultures see bananas as a "cooling" fruit that can lower both the physical and emotional temperature of expectant mothers. In Thailand , for example, pregnant women eat bananas to ensure their baby is born with a cool temperature.

Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD): Bananas can help SAD sufferers because they contain the natural mood enhancer tryptophan.

Smoking &Tobacco Use: Bananas can also help people trying to give up smoking. The B6, B12 they contain, as well as the potassium and magnesium found in them, help the body recover from the effects of nicotine withdrawal.

Stress: Potassium is a vital mineral, which helps normalize the heartbeat, sends oxygen to the brain and regulates your body's water balance. When we are stressed, our metabolic rate rises, thereby reducing our potassium levels. These can be rebalanced with the help of a high-potassium banana snack.

Strokes: According to research in The New England Journal of Medicine, eating bananas as part of a regular diet can cut the risk of death by strokes by as much as 40%!

Ulcers: The banana is used as the dietary food against intestinal disorders because of its soft texture and smoothness. It is the only raw fruit that can be eaten without distress in over-chronicler cases. It also neutralizes over-acidity and reduces irritation by coating the lining of the stomach.

Warts: Those keen on natural alternatives swear that if you want to kill off a wart, take a piece of banana skin and place it on the wart, with the yellow side out. Carefully hold the skin in place with a plaster or surgical tape!

So, a banana really is a natural remedy for many ills. When you compare it to an apple, it has four times the protein, twice the carbohydrate, three times the phosphorus, five times the vitamin A and iron, and twice the other vitamins and minerals. It is also rich in potassium and is one of the best value foods around. So maybe its time to change that well-known phrase so that we say, "A banana a day keeps the doctor away!"

Gut Feeling

Simple-minded people are the happiest bunch in the world. Forget about the math. Follow your gut feeling.

In fact, our gut really has a complex nervous system called Enteric Nervous System. It contains more neurons than the spinal cord and is sometimes referred to as our "second brain". Those nerves may contribute to some of our unconscious feelings such as happiness and sadness.

Paternal Leave

I have just read a joke on a magazine. It is in Chinese and I have made it into English here with a few changes:

Soldier: I would like to take a few weeks off to take care of the baby my wife is having, Sir.

Sergeant: Sure. Go for it.

After the soldier come back to work the Sergeant asked about the new-born baby and the mother.

Soldier: Don't be ridiculous. It's gotta be 9 months before the baby is born, Sir.

Choices

Well.. I always say life is not shaped by capability you have but the choices you make. The days of being a school kid has long gone. No one is going to show us a path. The problem is, you will never know for certain the outcome of the choice when you have to make one. It comes down to nothing but a bet.

Highway Robbery

Tell you a joke. It is from http://rootsgpk.blogspot.com again.

A woman takes a lover home during the day while her husband is at work.
Her 9-year old son comes home unexpectedly, sees them and hides in the bedroom closet to watch.
The woman's husband also comes home. She puts her lover in the closet, not realizing that the little boy is in there already.
The little boy says, "Dark in here."
The man says, "Yes, it is."
Boy - "I have a baseball."
Man - "That's nice."
Boy - "Want to buy it?"
Man - "No, thanks."
Boy - "My dad's outside."
Man - "OK, how much?"
Boy - "$150"
Man - "Sold."
In the next few weeks, it happens again that the boy and the lover are in the closet together.
Boy - "Dark in here."
Man - "Yes, it is."
Boy - "I have a Wilson infielder's glove."
The lover, remembering the last time, asks the boy, "How much?"
Boy - "$350"
Man - "Highway robbery. Sold."
A few days later, the father says to the boy, "Grab your gloves, let's go outside and have a game of catch."
The boy says, "I can't, I sold my ball and my glove."
The father asks, "How much did you sell them for?"
The boy says, "$500"
The father says, "That's terrible to overcharge your friends like that... that is way more than those two things cost. I'm going to take you to church and make you confess your greed."
They go to the church and the father makes the little boy sit in the confession booth and he closes the door.
The boy says, "Dark in here."
The priest says, "Don't start that sh ..t again, you're in my closet now!"

Depression

I am feeling a bit depressed lately. I have no interest to do anything when I get back to home at night. It is one of the clinical symptoms of depression. Well, at least I am still motivated to play squash with those guys and have the ambition to beat them all to hell. Reading 鹿鼎記 also cheers me up.

Napoleon Dynamite

It is a freaking funny movie about the school life a nerd back in a countryside in Idaho. Here are some of the funny quotes from the movie:

Teacher: Your current event, Napoleon.
Napoleon Dynamite: Last week, Japanese scientists explaced... placed explosive detonators at the bottom of Lake Loch Ness to blow Nessie out of the water. Sir Godfrey of the Nessie Alliance summoned the help of Scotland's local wizards to cast a protective spell over the lake and its local residents and all those who seek for the peaceful existence of our underwater ally.
___________________________

Don: Hey Napoleon, did you wet the bed last night?
Napoleon Dynamite: Hey Don, did you take a dump in your bed last night?
Don: I could kick your butt Napoleon so I'd shut up
Napoleon Dynamite: Why don't you go tell your mom to shut up
Don: What'd you say?
Napoleon Dynamite: Whatever I feel like I wanna say
Don: Did you say something about my mom?
Napoleon Dynamite: Maybe I did and maybe I didn't
Don: Do you wanna die Napoleon?
Napoleon Dynamite: Yeah right. Who's the only one here who knows the illegal ninja moves from the government?
___________________________

Napoleon Dynamite: [referring to Deb's milk] I see you're drinking 1%. Is that 'cause you think you're fat? 'Cause you're not. You could be drinking whole if you wanted to.
___________________________

Don: Hey, Napoleon. What did you do last summer again?
Napoleon Dynamite: I told you! I spent it with my uncle in Alaska hunting wolverines!
Don: Did you shoot any?
Napoleon Dynamite: Yes, like 50 of 'em! They kept trying to attack my cousins, what the heck would you do in a situation like that?
Don: What kind of gun did you use?
Napoleon Dynamite: A freakin' 12-gauge, what do you think?

Aroom Represents

1. High High - Yokohara/Joey Tang
2. The Realazy Mofo - Yokohara/Mc Yan
Kit/Joey Tang
Phat/DJ Tommy
Joey Tang/HK String Quartet
(Brown Sugar Mix) - Oakey
8. 1127 (Big Eater Mix) - DJ Tommy
9. X家拎 (Video Drome Dance Hall) - Video Drome With 壞碑唇
10. YYYY (Slow Tech Riddim Mix)
(Retile Skank Mix) - Richy Swan

Happy Tree Friends

The students showed me a very funny cartoon series today. The characters are cute animals, but they are mad. This is the latest episode. Mind you. It is freaking violent and bloody.

If you love it, crave on it here.

Terminal 2

Karma

I am only 32 years old, but it seems to me that I have gone through a few reincarnations already: childhood, my first relation, my second relation, and now. It is not only the way of living but the mentality that have changed. One reincarnation is the result of the previous. There is no way to get away from karma.

That reminds me of my favorite manga series: Phoenix by Osamu Tezuka

簡評 (adapted from here)

Student Union's Magazine

I was reading the April issue of the CU Student Union's Magazine. In one of the articles, the author discusses that Hong Kong is still being run like a colony after 1997. This is pretty true, although no one would admit it. The promise of "No change in 50 years" probably includes the status of being a colony. That's fine. But the daily experience and the way the society runs give young people an impression that we are not able to control our own destiny. This mentality will ruin the society.

I was not so aware of this before I worked in the US. Yes, Americans are arrogant, and many of them are even ignorant. But they understand that anyone in the world can make a difference. It is your choice but not your ability that decide your way of living.

I told people that I would retire in Europe but not work there. Not to mention they do not accept Asian as much as the Americans, European societies are not as open to individual performance as well.

I am glad that the Student Union's Magazine is having so many quality articles on local affairs, politics and movies. It also has one thing that most Presses in Hong Kong dare not to have: a strong and firm political stand point. Righteousness and guts are all it takes to become a world-class newspaper. Keep it up.

The Brain Transplant

Tell you a joke. It is from http://rootsgpk.blogspot.com again:

In the hospital the relatives gathered in the waiting room, where their family member lay gravely ill.
Finally, the doctor came in looking tired and somber, "I'm afraid I'm the bearer of bad news," he said as he surveyed the worried faces, "The only hope left for your loved one at this time is a brain transplant. It's an experimental procedure, very risky but it is the only hope. Insurance will cover the procedure, but you will have to pay for the brain yourselves.."
The family members sat silent as they absorbed the news.
After a great length of time, someone asked, "Well, how much does a brain cost?"

The doctor quickly responded, "$5,000 for a male brain, and $200 for a female brain."

The moment turned awkward. Men in the room tried not to smile, avoiding eye contact with the women, but some actually smirked.

A man unable to control his curiosity, blurted out the question everyone wanted to ask, "Why does the male brain cost so much more?"
"The doctor smiled at the childish innocence and explained to the entire group, "It's just standard pricing procedure. We have to mark down the price of the female brains, because they've actually been used."

Swing When You're Winning

This is one of my favorite music albums: Robbie Williams sings the Jazz classics. The name of the album is reminiscent of his previous Sing When You're Winning, and you can't stop from swinging when you listen to this album. I don't fancy Robbie Williams' pop songs, but I was stunned when I first listened to this album at HMV. At one point I was playing this album in my car, and Jacopo complained that this guy was faking Frank Sinatra. I said to him that Frank Sinatra was a great Jazz singer, but Robbie Williams had a even better voice and talent for Jazz.

This album was released in 2001 and was the 4th solo album of Robbie Williams'. It is in fact the dream-comes-true of his - RW himself is a life-long admirer of Frank Sinatra. He even did the recording at the Capitol Studios in Los Angeles, Sinatra's favorite studio. In this album, RW covers Sinatra's Mack the Knife, Do Nothing till you Hear from Me, One for my Baby, Something Stupid (FS duets with his daughter Nancy Sinatra), and a "live duet" with FS in It was a very Good Year. There are songs from other famous Jazz singers, such as Beyond the Sea (my favorite) by Bob Darin. In only 2 weeks, 2 millions copies of the album had been sold in Europe.

With this album, RW earned the honor to perform in the Royal Albert Hall in London. I didn't know how prestigious the Royal Albert Hall was before I saw the DVD (named Robbie Williams - Live at the Albert) - men in Tuxedos and womens in evening dresses at round tables with champaign in their hands, and the band sitting in front of the stage was the London Philharmonic Orchestra. In this live performance, RW sang all the songs in the album, plus a few more classics. RW's cover of Frank Sinatra's My Way at the finale was literally moving. You can tell he is enjoying the show, not performing. His unorthodoxal personality gives him the charm that other artists don't possess. He dared smoking cigarette on the stage in the Albert Hall!

It is rumoring that the sequel of Swing When You're Winning is being recorded and to be release at the end of this year, bearing the name "Let's Swing Again". Man... It's gonna be an event.

Backyard

By the way,究竟家威架係真「露荀」定係喪改Lancer?
